THE LOOK AND THE STRUCTURE

From tread to riser.
A continuous oak finish.

The tread is the surface you step on. The riser is the vertical face between one tread and the next. In a closed tread staircase, solid risers fill those spaces, creating a continuous appearance along the flight.

Our system combines oak treads and risers with a metal framework beneath. Glass balustrades can keep views across the room open, while spindle designs offer a more defined outline.

Also called a closed riser staircase, this design suits new homes and renovations where a more enclosed flight is preferred.

Contrasting treads and risers complement the decorative metal balustrade. The shaped lower flight shows how a closed tread staircase can respond to an individual entrance.

MAKE IT YOURS

Bring the steps, handrail
and interior together.

With both treads and risers visible, the oak finish plays a large part in the design. Consider it alongside your flooring, doors and balustrade.

Oak stains and colour matching
Choose from a wide stain range for the premium European oak treads. We also offer colour matching. Share a flooring sample and discuss how the tread, riser and handrail finishes should work together.
Glass or metal spindles
Glass gives an open view across the side of the flight. Metal spindles create a more defined pattern. The standard package includes glass; alternative balustrades can be reviewed and priced for your project.
Handrails and feature steps
Coordinate the oak handrail with the steps and landing. If you would like a wider or rounded starting step, share your ideas so we can review the available space and confirm the additional specification.
Lighting and surrounding finishes
Ask about LED groove preparation if you want lighting beneath the tread edges. Agree the scope for LED strips, drivers and electrical work separately, together with any underside or adjacent building finishes.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Plan the steps.
Consider the space around them.

The opening, finished floor levels and headroom help determine the layout. The first step, arrival at the landing and how the underside is finished should also be considered early.

Send us plans, photographs and approximate dimensions to start a discussion. We can work with you, your architect or your builder to review the details before manufacture.

Replacing existing stairs? Share photographs of the current flight, opening and landing before choosing your layout.

  1. Finished floor levels

Include the floor finishes at both levels, so the first and last steps are designed around the completed space.

  2. Opening and movement around the stairs

Share the opening dimensions and the position of nearby doors, corridors and the preferred starting point.

  3. Landing edges and underside

Show where landing balustrades are needed and discuss whether the underside will remain visible or be enclosed as part of the building work.

  4. Supporting structure and access

Provide available floor and landing details, photographs of the area and information about delivery and installation access.

What is the difference between closed tread and open tread stairs?

A closed tread staircase has solid risers between the steps. An open tread design leaves those spaces open. The main visual difference is the continuous face of the closed flight. If you prefer an open appearance, you can also compare our floating and central spine systems.

Can the oak finish match my flooring?

We offer a wide stain range and colour matching for the premium European oak treads. Share a flooring sample or another finish you would like to coordinate with, and we can discuss the riser and handrail finishes too. Natural oak grain varies between pieces.

Can I choose glass or metal spindles?

Yes. Closed risers can be combined with either glass or a suitable spindle design. The standard online package includes glass and an oak handrail. Metal spindles and other balustrade details are reviewed and priced separately for your project.

Can a closed tread staircase replace my existing stairs?

It may be possible, depending on the floor opening, floor levels, headroom and supporting structure. Send us photographs and any available plans before ordering. We can discuss a suitable layout and identify any related building work that needs to be considered.

Does a closed tread staircase include storage underneath?

Closed tread describes the risers between the steps. Cupboards, storage fittings and underside boxing are separate items and are not included in the standard staircase package. If you want storage beneath the flight, discuss it with us and your builder during the design stage.

How long does a closed tread staircase take to manufacture?

Manufacturing takes approximately 4–6 weeks from approval of the drawings. Design, revisions, delivery and installation are discussed separately around your project programme.

Can my own builder install the staircase?

Yes. We provide installation instructions and advice for customers using their own installer. Confirm the installation scope and site preparation with us. OVOMS installation is also available at an additional cost.

What if the standard layouts do not suit my project?

Share your plans and we can discuss a fully bespoke staircase . You can also explore all four staircase systems if you are still deciding on the overall design.
